The Prudential Gallo-Touch of Italy Foundation presented a $1,000 scholarship to graduating Sussex Technical High School senior Kelly Pearson on May 29. The foundation offers this scholarship annually to a high school senior who plans to pursue any area in the performing arts at the university level. The 2011 scholarship recipient was Cape Henlopen High School senior Caitlin Taylor Wood.
Honors student Kelly Pearson graduated from Sussex Tech with a 95.7 GPA while excelling in Advanced Placement courses and Academic Challenge courses at Delaware Technical and Community College. Pearson’s passion for dance was apparent in her affiliation with the First State Academy of Dance, Coastal Dance Academy, and the Sussex Tech Platinum PomPom Squad.
In addition to her performances with these groups, Pearson also donated her time to participate in charitable performances for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, the Rehoboth Beach Sea Witch Festival, Duffy’s Hope Celebrity Basketball Tournament, and many others. Pearson was recently selected to audition to attend the Radio City Music Hall Rockette Summer Intensive Program in New York City this summer.
Pearson will be majoring in dance at the Shenandoah University Conservatory in Winchester, Va. She will begin the four-year program in the fall of this year.
Graduating seniors from Cape Henlopen High School and Sussex Technical High School are welcome to apply for the 2013 scholarship. Please see your high school guidance counselors for application.
The foundation was created in 2010 to assist local organizations in the resort region that focus on the arts, children, and the elderly. An upcoming event that benefits the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing and Coastal Concerts will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Cape Henlopen High School. The concert will feature soprano Patricia Racette, performing operatic arias and Broadway standards. Concert details can be found at www.OperaAtTheBeach.com very soon!
